Your motorbike is equipped with a cornering optimised anti-lock braking system (ABS). What is the purpose of this assist system?

Cornering-optimised ABS is designed to help you brake more safely when the motorcycle is leaned over in a bend. In a corner, the tyres already use part of their available grip for turning (lateral grip). If you then brake hard, the remaining grip for braking is limited and the risk of a wheel locking and sliding increases. Cornering ABS adapts the braking pressure more carefully to the lean angle so the wheels keep rotating and the bike stays more stable and steerable during a critical braking manoeuvre while cornering (answer 1).

A second effect is the “righting moment.” When you brake while leaned over, forces at the front wheel tend to make the motorcycle stand up and run wider (it wants to go more straight). Cornering ABS aims to reduce this tendency by managing brake force distribution and pressure build-up more smoothly when the bike is leaned, so the bike is less likely to abruptly straighten up (answer 2). It does not increase the righting moment (so answer 3 is wrong).

Rule of thumb for similar questions: Normal ABS mainly prevents wheel lock in straight-line braking. Cornering ABS additionally takes the lean angle into account to maintain stability and steering in a turn and to reduce the bike’s tendency to stand up under braking.
